Google Chrome version 6, 7 and 8 by this year end!

We all know Google released its new version Chrome 5 browser just a month back and few days back Chrome 6 beta also released with some ultimate features. Now it is all set to release the next and more stable version Chrome 6 in coming September. Google is working a lot these days on Chrome to make it one of the best web browser which can compete strongly with Firefox and Internet Explorer.

Google said that it is planning on releasing a new stable version of Chrome every six weeks, which is about twice as fast as the release pace today. The goal is to make new features available when they are done and to make Chrome releases more predictable.

Google released a first beta version of Chrome for Microsoft Windows on 2 September 2008, and the public stable release was on 11 December 2008. From there the journey of Chrome started. below is the brief about Chrome versions,

  • ver.1 : 11/12/2008
  • ver.2 : 24/05/2009
  • ver.3 : 12/10/2009
  • ver.4 : 25/01/2010
  • ver.5 : 26/07/2010

We can see 14 months ago, Chrome was still at version number 1. Today we are well into the version 5 cycle with version 6 approaching beta status. Without doubt, Chrome shows the fastest pace not just in version numbers, but new features, performance and GUI modifications.

Google never stopped implementing new features in Chrome keeping in mind the big rivals Firefox and IE. May a times Firefox imitated Chrome to attract the users back to Firefox. But it never succeeded with its moves.

Google program manager Anthony Laforge wrote in a blog post, “Those numbers will start to move a little faster than before. Please don’t read too much into the pace of version number changes – they just mean we are moving through release cycles and we are geared up to get fresher releases into your hands!”

We Suggest: Release Early, Release Often

No wonder that Google Chrome may almost reach version number parity with Internet Explorer by the end of the year. Shorter release cycles play into Google’s pace of development, the company said. “We have new features coming out all the time and do not want users to have to wait months before they can use them.” Google promises that the quality will not be impacted: “If a feature is not ready, it will not ship in a stable release.”

Browser new versionsLastly the fact is, Google’s pace is much faster than Mozilla’s and Microsoft’s road-map. Mozilla is aiming for a major new release once every six months and Microsoft is more on an 18-24 month schedule, which is down from a 5-year schedule in the first half of the decade.

Well, that’s all we got for you guys now. Please do share your view about Google’s strategy on Chrome releases. You think they are fast? or that is fine? Share it 🙂
