Wow! Apple is back in game again. Isn’t it so?

Well just to give a flashback, Apple first version of iOS in June 29, 2007  was known as iPhone OS before June 2010. What made Apple Inc., and Steve Jobs to change its name?

If you remember, Apple released iOS version 4 with lots of great new features which was totally mobile-centric. Maybe a silly reason. But iOS 4 is one of the productive and game changing releases by Apple!

These all happened a year back and now let us get into yet another awesome release by Apple => iOS 5. Most of you would be knowing, Apple Inc., had a press conference called WWDC 2011 just few days back and they demoed the next version of iOS.

As expected, iOS 5 is packed with lots of amazing and great new features. iOS 5 includes more than 200 new features and we got few as of now. But we promise to share all of them in coming few days.

As iOS is single operating which works on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, there are few features which which works only on iPad.

Notification Center

• Non intrusive Pop-up notifications. New notifications show in a notification bar which appears every time a notification is received -SMS, missed phone calls and regular notifications from every 3rd party app.
• All notifications concentrated to Notification center – just swipe downwards to open it. Notification center shows as a list of all notifications.
• Notification list on lock screen: Notification center list shown.
• Shows stocks and live weather on top of notifications (iPhone and iPod touch only)

iMessage

• Messaging between all iOS devices running iOS 5 (iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4G, iPad & iPad 2) through Wi-Fi or 3G.

Newsstand

• A new icon on Springboard, which opens to an iBooks-inspired folder which shows all papers and magazines downloaded from app store.
• Subscriptions to newspapers etc available for browsing and downloading in a dedicated section of the App Store – stored in the Newsstand folder.

• Location-aware notifications, triggered when the device approaches a set position. (E.g. remind to get milk when device leaves workplace or approaches a grocery store)

When Google entered Browser war, people thought it can’t go long way as there were many bugs. But then Google worked really hard on Chrome browser. Chrome 6 was noted to be game changing version of Chrome browser as it got lot of new features.

Chrome browser is very well known for its faster webpage rendering and compactness. Chrome was the first browser to provide wider webpage display area when compared Firefox or Internet Explorer.

Later Firefox 4 and Internet Explorer 9 followed this feature of Chrome.

Now here comes one more shocking feature by Google. This can blow your mind and lets you think what’s next?

Kill URL bar if you don’t like

Google has decided to kill URL or address bar in Chrome browser. In the latest canary and nightly build of Chrome browser, Chromium team has added a new flag which kills URL bar.

Compact navigation feature lets you “add a Hide the toolbar entry to the tabstrip’s context menu. Use this to toggle between always displaying the toolbar (default) and only opening it as a drop down box as needed.”

We can’t say Chrome is going to be URL bar-less browser. Google just thought about making it more flexible and now provides 30pixels more webpage vertical display.

Instead of showing a URL bar permanently, the user will have to click a tab to see a shortened version of the URL bar that is displayed with a hover effect, if you move the mouse pointer away from the field, the URL bar disappears.

Once you enable this flag, new tabstrip entry will be added i.e. “Hide the toolbar”. Clicking on this will shut the URL bar, moves the tool menu to tabstrip and introduces new back/forward buttons. Just click on the tab will show the reduced version of new address bar.

Negative Side of URL bar-less Chrome

Google is on mission about making all their products run similarly on all the PC and mobile devices like Tablets. But this has got couple of negative side or disadvantages.

1. Killing the URL bar approach may be pointless for large desktop screens.
2. Killing URL bar also Killed Chrome Extensions like Shareaholic, Chrome SEO and more

This feature will be very useful for mobile devices but not for Desktop version. It may get added in Chrome 13 or in later version of Chrome. This may be good competitor for Firefox’s Awesomebar which is now old Chrome’s URL bar

As you all know Mozilla has changed its recycle cycle and cut down to release new version of Firefox once in every 3months. And as per the latest rapid release cycle Mozilla has reached the beta release date for Firefox 5.

Firefox 5 Beta will be released on May 17, 2011 i.e. tomorrow.

Mozilla Firefox is moving to a rapid release development cycle to deliver new features, performance enhancements, security updates and stability improvements to users faster. To help with this, Mozilla recently launched the Firefox Aurora channel to give users more opportunities to participate in building Firefox. The Aurora channel is where users can test early stage features for future versions of Firefox without all the polish and stability of a beta release.

But here we got a small feature which was added in Aurora build of Firefox few weeks back called as “Channel Switcher“. Using this Channel Switcher, users can change the channel to get beta which in turn updated your Aurora build to Firefox 5 beta.

5 steps to get Firefox 5 beta using Aurora?

Following are the steps you should follow to get Firefox 5 Beta before the official release,

• Step 1: Download Firefox Aurora Build

• Step 2: Open the About Dialog

• Step 3: Click on “Change” as highlighted in below image.

• Step 4: Choose Beta from the drop down

• Step 5: Click on “Apply and Update” button to get Firefox 5 Beta

This beta version has been released unofficially some time ago. If you had already downloaded then you are already on beta path.

Following are the Firefox releases scheduled for tomorrow,

• Firefox 3.7 (pre-release builds of a1-a5)
• Firefox 4.0b (beta builds 1- 12)
• Firefox 4.0.1 beta
• Firefox 5.0b1 (test beta)

If you are already using Aurora build of Firefox browser, you will not receive the beta update notification as it offers “Channel Switcher” option for manual update. Mozilla also said even Firefox 3.6 and 4.0 (final release) users will also not receive a beta notification.

Either you can follow the steps mentioned above to taste the Firefox 5 Beta or you should wait for official release.

Mozilla Firefox 3.5 version was released on June 2009 which complete 2 years now. Firefox 3.5 came up with variety of new features which was twice as fast as Firefox 3.0 due to the introduction of TraceMonkey JavaScript engine and rendering improvements.

But the current version Firefox 4.0 which came out with lots and lots of features and better UI tweak. We had even informed you that Mozilla will soon stop shipping Firefox 3.6. Well this move was mainly to make room for Firefox 4.0

Unplugging Firefox 3.5

Well finally Mozilla started to unplug the older versions of its browser. Mozilla has planned to disconnect updates for Firefox 3.5 in one month from now and planning to push them towards either 3.6 or 4.0 release.

Mozilla has been frustrated with their efforts to move users off of old releases and are worried too many people do not upgrade and are on vulnerable and unsupported versions of Firefox.

Currently Firefox 3.5 is having 12 million active users and Mozilla wants to put EOL flag as quickly as possible.

Firefox 3.5 → 3.6 is the “perfect storm”

Well after hearing to this news most of us would have thought Mozilla will try to push their Firefox 3.5 users towards 4.0. This is quite obvious because Firefox 4.0 provides a secure browsing and is very less vulnerable.

But Mozilla thinks it will be better to force their users to update to Firefox 3.6 due to couple of reasons.

1. More than 95% of add-ons which are compatible for Firefox 3.5 works fine with 3.6 version
2. Virtually no UI changes and the changes are mainly additive

How do they communicate?

Mozilla has found some interesting ways of communicating this news to their users.

Small text/images shown at the bottom of the customized Google start/home page. Only has an impact for users who have the default homepage.

A popup with a message about the update and the ability to easily opt-in and install. Only an option when a non-3.5 update is available.

Making noise through various PR channels. Likely won’t have a material impact.

If users browse to Mozilla web properties (MDN, mozilla.com, AMO) some random way we can show some sort of message.

Conclusion

Mozilla is planning to release the last and small update for Firefox 3.5 on June 21. This news will be circulated via article and tweet to raise awareness as soon as possible.

As a webpage designer and web application developer each and every one of us will have one question in mind for sure. Will my webpage work fine with the future releases of the browser? Or do I’ve to redesign it? Isn’t it?

To solve these problems, Chrome started with different channel called Chromium which provides a facility to download the latest build of the product. After Chrome, even Apple’s Safari, Internet Explorer and Firefox started releasing the lot many betas, aurora, platform preview etc. These releases surely help the developer to test their webpage for future releases.

Now! Where’s Opera? It is nowhere in the frame right? This is because till now Opera was stuck to release only beta, RC’s and final version. But now even they joined their rival browsers with the new release cycle.

What is Opera Next?

Opera Next is a stand-alone installation of the Opera desktop browser intended for testing the development of new features, technologies, and improvements.

Opera Next automatically updates when new versions become available without affecting your everyday browsing. This means whenever the new version is available Opera Next will let you update your Opera Next installation.

One good thing about Opera Next is, just similar to Chrome and IE, Opera Next will never affect the Opera installation, so you’re safe to play around with alphas, betas and even snapshots! User can run Opera and Opera Next simultaneously.

You can also distinguish between Opera and Opera next by the difference the logo. Opera Next comes with the white colour logo.

Opera and Opera Next’s Release Cycle

Well this time around, Opera has got a fresh and best release cycle to stay in browser war. The standard development release cycle for Opera Next includes builds of: snapshots, alpha, beta, beta2, release candidate (RC), RC2, and final.

But user can also configure this release cycle. opera:config allows users to disables automatic updates of snapshots for Opera Next.

In comparison to Opera Next, the Opera browser product is designed for day-to-day use and is only released for beta, release candidate (RC), and final versions. While these releases are identical to beta, RC, and final versions of Opera Next, the installations still remain separate, as described above. Auto-update only applies to final releases of the Opera browser (if this is enabled) as shown in the diagram below.

Key Notes:

• The diagram above depicts release cycles for Opera Next with default settings and Opera with auto-update enabled.
• O = optional manual download. If you download a beta build, any beta2 is automatically updated, followed by the final. For manual download of RC, only final builds are automatically updated.

What is new in Opera Next?

Extensions were introduced in Opera 11. Now with Opera 11.50 we take them to the next level! Developers can add new functionality to your Speed Dial. A click of your mouse opens a new tab that could show live news feeds, display the weather, present email notifications or much more.

We hope the new release cycle will work out really well Opera team by getting some more users. Opera 11 couldn’t get expected market share but the overall market share of Opera has got a little jump as Firefox and Internet Explorer lost some.

Microsoft released it latest version of its browser, Internet Explorer 9 just two months back. Mozilla finally released Firefox 4 which took almost a year to develop and test. Opera slowly and silently releasing the updated version now and then. About Chrome, Google never stopped the updating process!

After all these latest updates how they are performing? Are they getting new users or losing the existing ones to their rivals?

Well the latest market share for the month of April is out and here what stats speak about.

Chrome’s Growth – Unstoppable

As you all know Google has got a new schedule plan of releasing new version of Chrome browser once in every six weeks. The plan is working out well for them as they started gaining more and more new users by releasing great and new features in very short period of time.

According to Net Applications, Google Chrome is almost nearing to 12% of market share which now stands at 11.94%. From last month, Chrome has certainly gained 0.37% of market share.

But another browsers statistics provide StatCounter speaks something different. According to StatCounter, Google Chrome’s market share stands at 18.29% which is 0.92% up from previous month stats.

Even after the release of next generation browser by Microsoft and Mozilla, Internet Explorer and Firefox market shares has gone down quite a bit.

Firefox 4 Better Than IE9 And Opera 11?

Well this month market share shows Firefox 4 is running on more machines when compared to Internet Explorer 9 and Opera 11.x. Nothing shocking in that as Firefox 4 surpassed IE9’s download count within few hours of public release. And Opera is not so impressive even though they got some amazing features.

Mozilla is nearing to release Firefox 5 in a month of time. It’s time for all these browser vendors to wake up soon and get some other advertising strategies to grab their lost market share. Else Chrome will eat their share soon as it is getting done with some great features in coming versions.

As you all know Google never stops adding new features to its browser Google Chrome. All these features made Google to enter the browsers war and became strong contender in very short span of time!

Hope you all checked out the latest browsers stats from Net Applications and StatCounter which clearly showed how Google Chrome conquered world in two years. Google Chrome stats is now inching towards Firefox.

Chrome 10 will be released in few days and has got some very good features in it. The current build of Chrome 11 showed two more additions under About:flags page.

FPS Counter

Well FPS stands for “Frames per Second“. As you can see in the image, it described as

Shows a page’s actual frame rate, in frames per second, when hardware acceleration is active.

As per our knowledge this feature is an addon for upcoming 3D rendering features for Chrome. But still not yet clear with it!

Focus Existing Tab on Open

Title says it all. Focus existing tab on open is described as,

Typing a URL of an existing tab into the omnibox results in refocusing the tab instead of loading in the current tab.

If you the list of features in Firefox 4, Mozilla strongly highlights on this features. This feature is very simple but it has advantage as well as disadvantage!

Advantage is, if a user has opened more tabs and does not remember which all tabs he/she has opened. In this condition, user can just type a URL and Chrome takes you to already opened tab.

Disadvantage is, user cannot open same URL twice! But Firefox 4 will allow to do so!

Well these are couple of additions in list of Chrome features. But it is still under flags and may take sometime to go live

Firefox 4 Beta 10 Download and Features

Finally some good news for Firefox users and Mozilla has accelerated its pace. Mozilla has released Beta 10 and proved that it will stuck to its plan.

Firefox 4 Beta 10 is jut an another minor update towards adding new features. Notably, following are some small updates,

1. Compatibilty and stability improvements when using Adobe Flash on Mac OS X
2. Improvements in memory usage
3. Support for a graphics driver blacklist to improve stability

It has also done some great improvement in fixing bugs. You can have a look at buglists fixed here.

May be Firefox 4 Beta 12!

Just a week before we got an update when Firefox 4 Beta 11 will be released. That time Mozilla had seriously said there won’t be Firefox 4 Beta 12 and will RC after beta 11.

But this time Mozilla has changed its plan. This is the updated beta plan as discussed in the Platform meeting earlier today. It is a modification of the previous plan based on current bug counts and fix rates.

1. If all betaN hardblockers are done by this Friday afternoon PST (2011-01-28) we will build beta 11 at that time. This is essentially staying on the previously posted plan
2. If on Friday there are remaining betaN hardblockers we will not build and instead defer the decision until Tuesday (2011-02-01)
3. If all betaN hardblockers are done by next Tuesday afternoon PST (2011-02-01) we will build beta 11 at that time. There will be no planned beta 12
4. If on Tuesday there are remaining betaN hardblockers we will make a judgement call
5. If on Tuesday the remaining betaN hardblockers are on track to land before Friday (2011-02-04), we will not build on Tuesday and instead wait for Friday. There will be no planned beta 12
6. If on Tuesday the remaining betaN hardblockers look at risk to land by Friday (2011-02-04) we will create beta 11 on Tuesday and plan on having a beta 12. Beta 12 will not have a fixed schedule and will instead be built when the remaining betaN hardblockers are at zero

As said in above 6 points, Mozilla still has plans for beta 12. And beta 11 release is all depends on how many hardblockers fixed.

There are still 72 bugs left that need to be fixed before the beta 11 and/or beta 12 can be released. However, if the remaining bugfixes land too late, there will be a beta 11 release next Tuesday and a Beta 12 will be built when all bugs are fixed, Mozilla’s Christian Legnitto said.

Ok, so how is this browsers war? Internet Explorer 9 inching towards its first RC, Mozilla’s plan towards Firefox 4 and Google Chrome’s never ending short releases! All these are heating up browsers war. We may expect Opera and Safari browsers joins soon.

Mozilla team is already very late and delayed more than 3months in releasing Firefox 4.0. But Mozilla team has planned to release Firefox 4.0 by February end. Hope we won’t see anymore delays!

Beta 9 and Updates

Last week Mozilla released Beta 9 and we saw some more new features added to it. Faster bookmarking and Startup and Per-compartment garbage collection were some of the new features added in Beta 9.

And it also got new database called IndexedDB. IndexedDB is an API for client-side storage of significant amounts of structured data and for high performance searches on this data using indexes. It is based on a W3C Working Draft for Indexed Database API.

Beta 10 and Beta 11 – 2 more to go!

Well Mozilla has made a good move to release 2 more beta’s before RC. To control risk for the RC the plan is to do two betas (10 and 11) rather than hold beta 10 for all betaN hardblockers. This will give them a week of beta coverage for the 318 bug fixes while still allowing beta coverage for the remaining betaN hardblockers.

Mozilla team also said that,

Code freeze for beta 10 and 11 will also be a bit different. Previous betas closed the tree to stabilize and reduce beta risk. At this point in development, every day counts–we cannot shut down mozilla-central over the weekend as we have done before.

And about the bugs and hard-blockers count,

1. More than 318 bugs have been marked fixed since beta 9.
2. 57 hardblockers left for Beta 11.
3. 39 final hardblockers left for RC.

Its more clear now that we may expect FF 4.0 RC by early February as planned by Mozilla development team. And final FF 4.0 by end of February.
