Firefox 4 Beta 11 By Early Next Week, Beta 12 Confirmed!

firefox 41 Firefox 4 Beta 11 By Early Next Week, Beta 12 Confirmed!Mozilla is getting ready to put an end to its beta channel for Firefox 4.0 and working really hard towards it. We have been covering all the latest buzz happening in and around Firefox browser from long time.

Mozilla just released Firefox 4.0 Beta 10 just few days before. As said before, beta 11 was planned to be out in market by this week. But due to an issue that was found when building on Windows package causing some delay.

Well Beta 11 has been tagged and is spinning (build, QA validation) now. And it will be out by early next week.

Few days back Mozilla team was planning to have a Beta 12 to fix some bugs which could not be fixed before Beta 11 release. And today we got a confirmation that Mozilla will be extending its beta branch to Beta 12.

During product planning meeting Mozilla team said,

B12 has a small enough list of bugs that it’s plausible it will be the last beta, though we’re not locking that up, since some of the plugin work needs to crystallize before we can assess timing risk.

So this confirms we will be getting one more beta before Mozilla team move towards first release candidate. We may expect Beta 12 before mid of February. Minified version of Firefox 4 has already moved to Beta 12!

As for now, it seems like Firefox 4 first RC and final release will be delayed for couple of weeks. Firefox is really loosing some fair amount of users to its rival browsers as they keep delaying Firefox 4.0 release.

Hope Firefox soon comes back into browsers war strongly! What you guys say? icon smile Firefox 4 Beta 11 By Early Next Week, Beta 12 Confirmed!

Microsoft’s HTML5 Add-on To Support H.264 On Chrome & Firefox!

If you all remember, Google Chrome will drop support for H.264 in the coming months and will only support WebM (VP8) and Theora codecs.

The reason is being getting into rapid innovation in the web media platform in the coming year and are focusing our investments in those technologies that are developed and licensed based on open web principles.

Well Google has started pushing its browser more towards HTML5 standards. Mozilla’s Firefox and Opera are the other two browsers which are encouraging developers to use WebM codecs.

The only important website that uses WebM is YouTube, Google’s video sharing service. Internet Explorer, Safari and iOS devices are still yet to think about supporting WebM.

Upon all this stories, Microsoft started releasing few add-ons for Chrome and Firefox which keeps them in touch with H.264 video format. Microsoft has started interoperability work related to modern web standards which are no way limited to Internet Explorer 9.

According to Microsoft,

The HTML5 Extension for Windows Media Player Firefox Plug-in is an add-on that enables Firefox users to play H.264-encoded videos on HTML5 pages by using the built-in capabilities found in Windows 7.

The Extension is based on a Firefox Add-on that parses HTML5 pages and replaces Video tags with a call to the Windows Media Player plug-in so that the content can be played in the browser.

This Add-on replaces video tags only if the video formats specified in the tag are among those supported by Windows Media Player. Tags that contain other video formats are not touched.

Similar to Firefox add-on, this extension for chrome enables its users to play H.264-encoded videos (aka MP4) on HTML5 pages by using the built-in capabilities found in Windows 7.

Well both the extensions checks if the browsers already supports MP4 (H.264) video codec, if so the extension will not be effective.

It’s very clear that H.264 provides a high-quality videos and is widely-used video format that serves the Web very well today. But browser providers like Google, Mozilla are stopped supporting it as they have to pay more royalties!

Microsoft has worked closely with Google to help them deliver a WebM implementation on Windows.

May be Firefox 4 Beta 12!

Just a week before we got an update when Firefox 4 Beta 11 will be released. That time Mozilla had seriously said there won’t be Firefox 4 Beta 12 and will RC after beta 11.

But this time Mozilla has changed its plan. This is the updated beta plan as discussed in the Platform meeting earlier today. It is a modification of the previous plan based on current bug counts and fix rates.

  1. If all betaN hardblockers are done by this Friday afternoon PST (2011-01-28) we will build beta 11 at that time. This is essentially staying on the previously posted plan
  2. If on Friday there are remaining betaN hardblockers we will not build and instead defer the decision until Tuesday (2011-02-01)
  3. If all betaN hardblockers are done by next Tuesday afternoon PST (2011-02-01) we will build beta 11 at that time. There will be no planned beta 12
  4. If on Tuesday there are remaining betaN hardblockers we will make a judgement call
  5. If on Tuesday the remaining betaN hardblockers are on track to land before Friday (2011-02-04), we will not build on Tuesday and instead wait for Friday. There will be no planned beta 12
  6. If on Tuesday the remaining betaN hardblockers look at risk to land by Friday (2011-02-04) we will create beta 11 on Tuesday and plan on having a beta 12. Beta 12 will not have a fixed schedule and will instead be built when the remaining betaN hardblockers are at zero

As said in above 6 points, Mozilla still has plans for beta 12. And beta 11 release is all depends on how many hardblockers fixed.

There are still 72 bugs left that need to be fixed before the beta 11 and/or beta 12 can be released. However, if the remaining bugfixes land too late, there will be a beta 11 release next Tuesday and a Beta 12 will be built when all bugs are fixed, Mozilla’s Christian Legnitto said.

Ok, so how is this browsers war? Internet Explorer 9 inching towards its first RC, Mozilla’s plan towards Firefox 4 and Google Chrome’s never ending short releases! All these are heating up browsers war. We may expect Opera and Safari browsers joins soon.

As for now, do you think Mozilla has accelerated its plan and releases Firefox 4 as planned during February end? Hit comment box now and share what you feel icon smile Mozilla Plans For Firefox 4 Beta 12, Releases Beta 10!

Firefox 4 Beta 10 Planned For January 24 & Beta 11 By 31!

firefox 41 Firefox 4 Beta 10 Planned For January 24 & Beta 11 By 31!Mozilla is back again with some news and they are trying to make their promise strong this time. We all saw some great new features, clean and chromified Firefox browser.

Mozilla team is already very late and delayed more than 3months in releasing Firefox 4.0. But Mozilla team has planned to release Firefox 4.0 by February end. Hope we won’t see anymore delays!

Beta 9 and Updates

firefox 4 beta 9 image Firefox 4 Beta 10 Planned For January 24 & Beta 11 By 31!

Last week Mozilla released Beta 9 and we saw some more new features added to it. Faster bookmarking and Startup and Per-compartment garbage collection were some of the new features added in Beta 9.

And it also got new database called IndexedDB. IndexedDB is an API for client-side storage of significant amounts of structured data and for high performance searches on this data using indexes. It is based on a W3C Working Draft for Indexed Database API.

Beta 10 and Beta 11 – 2 more to go!

firefox 4 beta 10 pre image Firefox 4 Beta 10 Planned For January 24 & Beta 11 By 31!

Well Mozilla has made a good move to release 2 more beta’s before RC. To control risk for the RC the plan is to do two betas (10 and 11) rather than hold beta 10 for all betaN hardblockers. This will give them a week of beta coverage for the 318 bug fixes while still allowing beta coverage for the remaining betaN hardblockers.

Mozilla team also said that,

Code freeze for beta 10 and 11 will also be a bit different. Previous betas closed the tree to stabilize and reduce beta risk. At this point in development, every day counts–we cannot shut down mozilla-central over the weekend as we have done before.

And about the bugs and hard-blockers count,

  1. More than 318 bugs have been marked fixed since beta 9.
  2. 57 hardblockers left for Beta 11.
  3. 39 final hardblockers left for RC.

Its more clear now that we may expect FF 4.0 RC by early February as planned by Mozilla development team. And final FF 4.0 by end of February.

Hope Mozilla won’t delay it anymore and we all get to have hands on most awaited Firefox 4.0 icon smile Firefox 4 Beta 10 Planned For January 24 & Beta 11 By 31! Watch out this space for more updates. Cheers icon wink Firefox 4 Beta 10 Planned For January 24 & Beta 11 By 31!
