mozilla labs firefox prospector image [How To] Hide URL Bar In Firefox Browser Like Chrome?

In our previous article we were speaking about how browsers got revolutionised in past few months. The latest browser versions have really got great makeovers and amazing features which makes them better when compared to their rivals.

But yes, Google and its Chrome browser is one of the strong leaders who forced Firefox and Internet Explorer to follow them with re-modifying their design.

Well all those are old stories and we hope you all accept this.

But Google team has went one step ahead in adding one more latest and mind blowing feature which killed/hide URL bar in Chrome browser. By the time wrote about this new feature it was only available through nightly builds and canary version. But now this feature has also hit developers’ version.

This makes clear that Compact Navigation is ready to get added in Chrome 13 feature list.

Hide URL Bar! But in Firefox!

Ok now let’s get into our article! Just few days after we noticed compact navigation feature of Google Chrome we were looking out for a way to do the same in Firefox browser.

Here comes Mozilla labs add-on which does the same compact navigation of Chrome.

LessChrome HD is a new Firefox add-on is another Mozilla labs experiment which gives as much space to the page and only shows the browser interface when needed.

The default browsing behavior now is to only show tabs at the top of the window, and pointing there will reveal the rest of the browser. Moving the mouse cursor back down makes it go away.

Well this experiment is an extension of Home dash experiments by Mozilla labs. Home dash used to display webpage in full screen mode with small icon on top-left corner. But due to users demand Mozilla labs team decided to show tabs on top with LessChrome HD add-on.

This add-on works fine on Firefox 4 and above versions only!

Advantage of this labs experiment when compared to Chrome’s compact navigation is it just hides the full URL bar and shows the same on mouse over. But Chrome’s compact navigation has got a new shorter version of URL bar.

Another advantage is none of the add-ons will be affected. Chrome’s new feature has almost killed extensions like Chrome SEO, Shareaholic!

Google Chrome 13 Features “Kill URL Bar” Flag!

When Google entered Browser war, people thought it can’t go long way as there were many bugs. But then Google worked really hard on Chrome browser. Chrome 6 was noted to be game changing version of Chrome browser as it got lot of new features.

Chrome browser is very well known for its faster webpage rendering and compactness. Chrome was the first browser to provide wider webpage display area when compared Firefox or Internet Explorer.

Later Firefox 4 and Internet Explorer 9 followed this feature of Chrome.

Now here comes one more shocking feature by Google. This can blow your mind and lets you think what’s next?

Google has decided to kill URL or address bar in Chrome browser. In the latest canary and nightly build of Chrome browser, Chromium team has added a new flag which kills URL bar.

Compact navigation feature lets you “add a Hide the toolbar entry to the tabstrip’s context menu. Use this to toggle between always displaying the toolbar (default) and only opening it as a drop down box as needed.”

We can’t say Chrome is going to be URL bar-less browser. Google just thought about making it more flexible and now provides 30pixels more webpage vertical display.

Instead of showing a URL bar permanently, the user will have to click a tab to see a shortened version of the URL bar that is displayed with a hover effect, if you move the mouse pointer away from the field, the URL bar disappears.

Once you enable this flag, new tabstrip entry will be added i.e. “Hide the toolbar”. Clicking on this will shut the URL bar, moves the tool menu to tabstrip and introduces new back/forward buttons. Just click on the tab will show the reduced version of new address bar.

Negative Side of URL bar-less Chrome

Google is on mission about making all their products run similarly on all the PC and mobile devices like Tablets. But this has got couple of negative side or disadvantages.

  1. Killing the URL bar approach may be pointless for large desktop screens.
  2. Killing URL bar also Killed Chrome Extensions like Shareaholic, Chrome SEO and more

This feature will be very useful for mobile devices but not for Desktop version. It may get added in Chrome 13 or in later version of Chrome. This may be good competitor for Firefox’s Awesomebar which is now old Chrome’s URL bar icon biggrin Google Chrome 13 Features “Kill URL Bar” Flag!

@Yahoo! Buzz users were allowed to share links, stories, images etc. It created a hopes that it would drive larger traffic to their site and would give them an advantage over larger online media companies such as Google or MSN, which are Yahoo!’s largest competitors in terms of search engines that provide services and web features to its customers.
