(Statistics)" width="520" height="204" />

On June 28, 2011, almost seven months ago, Google came up with an all new social networking site called Google+. It is sometimes pronounced and written as Google Plus and abbreviated as G+. G+ was launched to compete the two most widely used social networking sites Facebook and Twitter.

Google is effectively supporting it’s new product Google+ to grow at a very high speed. They are utilizing their users base to efficiently promote their social networking site Google+. Latest private estimation shows that, there are more than 90 million Google+ users today with strong and steady growth continuing in January.

The Google+ team constantly emphasizes that they are just getting started. Since mid-December, Google+ has been growing by more than 600,000 users daily. By looking at this growth many tech analysts predicted that Google+ will reach 400 million user base by end of 2012! That’s very huge when compared to growth of other social networking sites!

But here’s why Google will surpass that number by a long shot.

#1. Android and its growth!

Many observers are mistakenly assuming that most of the new Android users are being registered to Google+ as they activate their Android devices, perhaps with no intention of even using it. The problem with this assumption is that it is not true.

Only a small fraction of the 600,000+ new daily users of Google+ are coming from Android. Remember, Android comes in many different flavors. The latest addition to this is Android version 4.0 (called as Ice Cream Sandwich – ICS).

Assuming Android ends the year on 550m devices (smartphones with tablets), and assuming that Ice Cream Sandwich by then is on about 40% of all Android devices (less than Gingerbread today but greater than Froyo), that means as many as 220m mobile users will have registered for Google+ while activating a phone or upgrading a phone to Android ICS. Most of these users will be in addition to the 273m from the online daily sign-ups.

#2. Chrome and Google+ Integration!

As you all know Google is very good at integrating their products together. Chrome browser has also got many plugins by Google which integrates Google+ notifications on Chrome’s extension area.

Google’s Chrome browser share has increased dramatically during the past 2 years and will likely continue. StatCounter browser share shows that it grew from 16% to 27% in 2011, while both IE and Firefox browser share declined. Chrome may end 2012 with as much as 40% of browser market share.

It is not clear how Google+ will be integrated into Chrome, if at all, but there are already dozens of popular Chrome extensions that enhance the usage of Google+. And it is very clear by following Google employees and by participating in hangouts with them, that Google employees are responding constantly to customer requests.

Google+ could become conscious of Chrome and vice versa. And certainly, Chrome could work very nicely with Google+ sharing. A Chrome user could potentially share any web content they discover anywhere (in a Posterous kind of way) with their Google+ circles.

#3. Youtube and Google+ Integration

Last year more than 1 trillion videos were played on YouTube. The potential for this to be leveraged in Google+ sharing can hardly be overstated. If you track fast growing Facebook apps, you’ll know that every few months a Turkish video sharing app experiences hyper growth.

YouTube has a share button underneath each video; but it’s too hidden to make YouTube videos go massively viral through Google+. Suppose that at the end of each video, instead of (or in addition to) the ad that overlays the video, the Google+ share feature were overlaid on top of the video.

Using algorithms matching the content with people’s interests, Google could suggest which circles you ought to share the video with. If only 1% of the 1 trillion YouTube videos were shared with circles, averaging 100 people, that would be 1 trillion invitations sent to friends/family/others to watch videos.

#4. Google+ APIs and Developers

Google IO has been scheduled for June and has been extended to 3 days this year. There are hundreds of thousands of Android developers, many of whom are anxious to build apps for Google+. Unleashing the creativity of these developers will provide Google+ users all kinds of apps.

Facebook’s Platform has created a very successful social gaming ecosystem. Zynga is worth $6 billion. More recently, Facebook has branched into online music sharing with partners like Spotify and iheartradio. There is talk that social TV is next. Google has 84 APIs including some of the world’s most popular APIs (maps, etc.). As these APIs intersect with Google+ social APIs, Google may have a far greater ability to achieve Zuckerberg’s vision of helping developers reinvent every industry with social than Facebook does.

#5. Google Search Plus and Image Sharing

Last week’s launch of Search Plus Your World ought to show these critics to see that Google has at least a billion opportunities every day (that’s the number of daily queries they process) to get people re-engaged with Google+. Re-engagement will not be a problem, long term.

And in addition to search, you have photos to engage people, where Google will soon be the world leader. Estimates show that more than 100,000,000 photos are uploaded to Google+ every day, and with more Android activations, and more Instant Uploads, and more users sharing more content, I forecast that Google+ will pass Facebook in daily photo uploads by the middle of 2012. That means that as its user base grows, more than 250 million photos will be uploaded to Google+ every day. By the end of 2012 it could be as high as 500 million photos uploaded daily.

And then there is video. This week Google+ made it possible to record a video and share it with your circles. You can also play YouTube videos directly from a little tab on the far right of Google+. Video watching and recording and sharing will be another powerful draw which will help make Google+ irresistible over time.

What we don’t know is how far past 40 million Google+ users was on Oct. 13th, 2011. We also don’t have a sophisticated enough model to account for the probability that Google is growing much faster in some countries (including some with non-Latin alphabets) than in others. And now analysis shows it might reach 400 millions of users.

According to above 5 points, we can guess it would reach more than half a billion users by end of 2012. Let’s see how it grows. We will update you as and when we get some update.

Special thanks to our unofficial Google+ statistician Mr. Paul Allen. [INFOGRAPHIC]" width="400" height="531" />

Welcome back to our continuous edition of articles about Browser Wars. Ever wondered how did this term Browser Wars evolve? There are many browsers being used by users, but Why only few made it to top? Are they really fighting?

Here is how Browser Wars term came into existence. According to wiki,

A Browser War is a metaphorical term that refers to competitions for dominance in usage share in the web browser marketplace. The term is often used to denote two specific rivalries: the competition that saw Microsoft’s Internet Explorer replace Netscape’s Navigator as the dominant browser during the late 1990s and the erosion of Internet Explorer’s market share since 2003 by a collection of emerging browsers including Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari, and Opera.

Hmm. Is that clear guys? Well there is more to be known! Do you what was Browser Wars called before?

There are two ages of the Internet – before Mosaic, and after. The combination of Tim Berners-Lee’s Web protocols, which provided connectivity, and Marc Andreesen’s browser, which provided a great interface, proved explosive. In twenty-four months, the Web has gone from being unknown to absolutely ubiquitous

Yes, it was called as Mosaic Wars! By mid-1995 the World Wide Web had received a great deal of attention in popular culture and the mass media. Netscape Navigator was the most widely used web browser and Microsoft had licensed Mosaic to create Internet Explorer 1.0,which it had released as part of the Microsoft Windows 95 Plus! Pack in August.

It was in mid-1995, Browser Wars started! and hence after different browsers played their role in this Browser War. Below is an Infographic by ReviverSoft, which describes the history of usage of different browsers and also the Browser Market Share, which is shared by some of the Best Browsers.

Infographic [Click to enlarge]

<img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6322" title="Browser Wars : How did it evolve? Isn’t it? Google is such a company which tries to spread their hand in every corner of Internet and grabs every opportunity to give more than expected.

Google Chrome, Google Search Engine, Google+ are few best examples we can give when speaking about Google. These are really a great products by them.

Google Chrome is one of the strongest player in Browser Wars and is strongly moving by acquiring more and more users from their rivals, Internet Explorer and Firefox. Users are moving towards Chrome because of the features it has and users find it as a best alternative browser!

If you all remember, we have shared a great change which Google team is making to Chrome to provide more browsing space to users. Yes, we are speaking about Google’s plan of killing URL bar in Chrome. Well, as a loyal Chrome browser user, @Tech18 team felt it as a best feature which can provide more space for what is expected out of browser.

But, Google has other plans! Google has quietly abandoned the idea of hiding the location bar to gain more pixel space for web content. Well removing this feature was just adding 2-3 lines of code, but Google said they have cancelled “Compact Navigation” flag and they aren’t going to include this as Chrome’s core feature.

Google discontinued this feature by removing following code in Chromium 94162 build.

While Google disabled the hidden switch to enable compact navigation as well, the code of the feature itself remains in Chrome. The only way for users to access this feature would be a developer version or nightly build of the browser that was published prior to July 26.

In a discussion thread comment, Google said,

Compact Nav prototype was meant to be a way for [Google] to try out a new form factor rather than be a permanent redesign. We don’t think that this is the optimal direction to take Chrome’s UI, so the experiment has ended and we’re removing the prototype.

When we had shared this update during the month of May, many of our readers liked it and even we agreed with them as it was something really different from prior releases. This feature was not required in PC – version of Chrome browser as we have larger screens. For tablets, yes it is useful!

Google aggressively ends the prototype and made it clear in their comment. No URL bar appeared to be a clear trend toward latest feature as even Mozilla followed up with a similar add-on for Firefox.

It’s all over now. Get back to older and lengthy location bar. Like it or not, Google has removed it as of now. Maybe they’ll think about it in later stage if required.

Google To Integrate Android Like Web-Intents in Chrome Apps!

Android

Browser Wars

Chrome

Google

Tech18

android apps

android os

browsers war

chrome apps

chrome webstore

Firefox

intents

There’s a lot of innovation going on in the browser wars these days. Google is planning to introduce Android’s Intent component to connect Chrome web-apps.

Innovation, Intelligence and Implementation are best three which suits Google on whichever product you consider. As a company, Google never did partiality to any of its product, they treated every product equally and they never backed while given strong competition to their rivals.

Here comes one more awesome and innovative idea by Google Chrome team which can raise the boiling point of Browser war above their rivals!

Few months back Google opened a webstore for Chrome web –apps which made users to access their favourite sites within few clicks. Many of them replaced native Windows or Mac applications. For example, you can consider Tweetdeck and Angry Birds game.

But these web apps are completely disconnected or require the use of complicated APIs in order to make use of a third-party service, e.g., posting a comment to Twitter from your custom publishing domain. What if we could give sites the ability to leverage these services without any knowledge of the chosen service, except that it provides some set of predefined functionality?

To fix this problem, Google brought in Android application architecture in place and thought of consuming few of the components. If you are an Android application developer you would have already known about a component which connects two applications in Android, if not they you can have a read below

Android OS has a component called Intents which is used to connect two applications without having in-depth knowledge on how other application has been coded. Intents is a facility for late run-time binding between components in the same or different applications.

In the Intents system, the client application requests a generic action, e.g. share, and specifies the data to pass to the selected service application. The user is given a list of applications which are registered so that they can handle the requested intent. The user-selected application is created in a new context and the data is passed sent from the client, the format of which is predefined for each specific intent type.

Well that shows clear picture how your Camera application on Android linked to Gallery. Isn’t it? When you take the same example for Chrome app, new photo hosting site could easily integrate editing functionality from something like Aviary or Picnik, without either of those services needing to implement a special API unique to that photo hosting site.

Yes, there are lots happening inside Google ecosystem and here is how they express their views,

We are hard at work designing an analogous system for the web: Web Intents. This web platform API will provide the same benefits of Android Intents, but better suited for web applications. When designing the system, we have first and foremost been interested in creating a simple, easy-to-use API. With Web Intents, you will be able to connect your web app to a service with as little as two lines of code! Chrome will perform the heavy lifting for you.

As with Android, Web Intents documents an initial set of intent actions (edit, view, share, etc.) that likely cover the majority of use cases on the web today; however, as the web grows and sites provide more functionality, new intent actions will be added by services that document these intents, some more popular than others. To foster development and use of intents, we plan to create a site to browse existing intents and add new intents.

That’s impressive! Isn’t it?

But here comes one more shocker for all of you. James Hawkins, Software Engineer at Google said,

Mozilla is also actively exploring this problem space. In fact we’re working closely with Mozilla engineers to unify our two proposals into one simple, useful API. Visit the examples page to try out the feature in any current browser. To explore using the API in your site, check out out the JavaScript shim, which provides an implementation of the API for browsers that have not implemented this feature. We are rapidly prototyping this feature, so check back soon for an announcement when Web Intents is available behind a flag in Chrome.

As Google said during I/O 2011, they are working towards unified ecosystem where each product works together which increases the ease of use!

Are you ready for Android like Apps within the fastest web browser? As you all know Google has lots of products under their brand and as a company it’s more than to make money out of some great product like Google Search, Chrome, Gmail, Adsense, Google+ etc..

We have been covering most of the new features which is getting added everyday inside Google world and today we got one amazing feature which can really turn the tables and answer to their rivals – “We are still here”!

Google added a new lab feature for Gmail / Google Mail today and expecting to compete against their arch rivals like Microsoft’s Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail and few others.

Google added a preview Pane to its mail client under the labs tab. Here is how you can enable it,

Step 1:

Log in to your Gmail account.

Step 2:

Click on “Labs”.

Step 3:

Scroll down the list and find out “Preview pane” or search for “Preview Pane”.

Step 4:

Select the “Enable” radio button

Step 5:

And then click the button “Save changes”

After clicking on save changes your page will be reloaded. If that doesn’t feel natural to you, you can change the timing in the General tab of settings:

We can easily understand the need of this feature getting into Gmail In quick session. Maybe we get to most of them to answer Microsoft which recently made a fun out of Gmail and Google Ads.

But who cares? Do you believe these entire nonsense acts by rivals?

==============================================================

One of my Facebook friend has a question.
