Go Green with Your Wordpress Blog

As we all know that Internet Browsing consumes a lot of energy in global level when compared to other resources. Our blogs are also responsible for Global Warming as the Internet Browsing emits certain amount of CO2 to the atmosphere which leads to Global Warming.

Online Leaf has developed a wordpress plugin which will install a green standby engine on your blog.

This engine will automatically generate a blackish background eliminating the animations and high graphics present in the blog when the visitors become inactive on your blog.

This results in less consumption of power from the monitor as the dark colors requires less energy consumption.

Below is the screen shot of the image which is created when your visitors become inactive

I’m sure you did it with best intentions, but if most of your readers are using 23″ LCD screens (or below, it seems), you might actually be using MORE power to display a whole black website, than if not. Only when you get up in bigger screen sizes, there could be a very little decrease. CRT screens, however, does decrease a bit, but not many uses those screens nowadays:

It would be better to create a post asking your readers to turn off their computer after use, that will save much, much more power ;)

True, but still about 20-25 % use CTR monitors, so the black screen helps those still.

But ALL monitors will use less energy on all green websites, even if they are not CTR, because the concept of Online Leaf is also to cover animations and visual effects. :) So that it’s black is just a bonus “energy reduction” to CTR monitors, but every computer will save energy, since they don’t have to generate and display motion (effects, animations and other graphical stuff).

Love the plugin! It’s a great initiative, and I hope they will come up with some more cool methods in their standbyengine. :)
