Google said Good-bye to one more product. But this product which created much hype => Google Wave!

Google today said that it will discontinue its active development efforts for Google Wave and possibly merge its technology into other products. The decision arrives somewhat unexpected as Google promoted the communication platform heavily through its developer blog. Google seems to be killing off projects lately more quickly and we wonder whether Buzz will be next.

Google Wave was an online software application product from Google, which Google described as “a new web application for real-time communication and collaboration”. It was first announced at the Google I/O conference on May 27, 2009. It is a web-based service, computing platform, and communications protocol designed to merge e-mail, instant messaging, wikis, and social networking.

Wave, a real time messaging platform, was unveiled in May 2009 to an enthusiastic crowd of developers at the Google I/O event in San Francisco. Well below are the few reasons why Google Wave didn’t make any impact,

  1. Slow loading as compared to Gmail
  2. As there were many customizable widgets in Google Wave, the loading time was bit more when compared with Gmail.

  3. No integration between Gmail and Wave
  4. Wave users were having separate ID for waving. Because of this, there was no link/integration between Gmail and Wave. Its of no use having 2 Google ID!!

  5. Lack of explanation how user can make best out of wave
  6. We accept there were many videos to explain about Google Wave. But none of them convince the normal user to start the Wave.

  7. No draft!
  8. If any new wave(mail) is not sent, they used to get saved in inbox as there was no draft feature. Lack of draft feature really made users go mad when differentiating new mail and the not sent mail!

  9. Complex GUI
  10. As the contents inside the wave page was customizable, users didn’t understand many things. The scroll bar used in many parts were not at all smooth as well.

These are the few reasons why Google waved bye-bye to Wave! Due to these reasons many users didn’t feel like using Wave at all.

“We don’t plan to continue developing Wave as a standalone product, but we will maintain the site at least through the end of the year and extend the technology for use in other Google projects,” the executive wrote.

The central parts of the code, as well as the protocols that have driven many of Wave’s innovations, like drag-and-drop and character-by-character live typing, are already available as open source, so customers and partners can continue the innovation that Google Wave began.

But end of the day Google had to take few tough decisions for itself. They can’t keep the product when it is not making any sense. Orkut also one of the product which is just standing on the tip of the mountain because loyal users from India and Brazil, else Google would have said bye-bye to Orkut by now.

Many are saying Google is all set to delete Buzz product from its list as well. But as of now Google wave is deleted already!
