As you all know Google has many strong running products in the market. Google search, open sourced mobile OS-Android, Chrome browser, new Google+ etc. All these products are growing day by day and making Google as a biggest rival for different companies who are working solely on one of this niche product!

Google acquired Android Inc., way back in 2005 and released first version of Android OS in 2007. From then Google and Android went through many hurdles. They had to fight against big guns like Apple’s iOS, Nokia’s Symbian and RIM’s Blackberry. But finally they got the grip on the OS market share and hence is used by many users worldwide.

Even though Google owns both Android and Chrome product, it never thought of integrating Chrome in Android and thus a normal webkit browser is used in all the Android phones. But from past few days there has been an on-going speculation that Google is planning to move Chrome browser into its Android platform and offer its successful webkit-based browser available on Android platforms as well. It now seems that Google is close to make that move.

Google’s Andrei Popescu wrote,

Hello WebKit!

We would like to give an update about WebKit on Android. A while ago, we started the effort to upstream the Android port of WebKit. For a variety of reasons, this work took longer than anticipated and was never finished. We realize that the incomplete Android port that exists today in WebKit ToT has caused quite a bit of confusion and inconvenience to the project as a whole and we are very sorry for that.

Over time, the Android Browser has come to share more and more code with Chrome (both WebKit and Chromium). This approach has a number of advantages for the WebKit community:

1. Android WebKit no longer requires a separate build system because we are able to reuse Chromium’s gyp system for building.
2. Android no longer requires a separate set of WebCore clients, platform abstractions, and embedder APIs because Android shares much of this code with the Chromium port.
3. The Android layout tests results more closely match chromium-linux and more expected results can be shared.

We plan to start by setting up a webkit.org build bot that will compile Chromium’s DRT for Android using the Android NDK, SDK and toolchain. We anticipate a reasonably small set of changes to the Chromium port to achieve this. We’re fully committed to maintaining this new flavor of the Chromium port of WebKit and having a build bot up and running as soon as possible will make this an easier task. At the same time, we will be removing the existing incomplete Android port. This includes the Android-specific code in WebCore/platform/android, as well as any code guarded by the PLATFORM(ANDROID) macro.

We’re looking forward to a much better collaboration with the WebKit community and we’d be very grateful to receive any feedback on this plan.

As Andrei said, for Google to introduce new flavour of the Chromium port of WebKit and having a build bot up and running as soon as possible is indeed an easier task as they have experts who have extensively worked on desktop version of Chrome browser. Even Android browser which is based on WebKit also uses V8 JavaScript engine, used by Google Chrome.

Good news for Android users as they will soon be using Google Chrome in their smartphones and tablets.

As we said before, Google is always known for it’s innovativeness. Isn’t it? Google is such a company which tries to spread their hand in every corner of Internet and grabs every opportunity to give more than expected.

Google Chrome, Google Search Engine, Google+ are few best examples we can give when speaking about Google. These are really a great products by them.

Google Chrome is one of the strongest player in Browser Wars and is strongly moving by acquiring more and more users from their rivals, Internet Explorer and Firefox. Users are moving towards Chrome because of the features it has and users find it as a best alternative browser!

If you all remember, we have shared a great change which Google team is making to Chrome to provide more browsing space to users. Yes, we are speaking about  Google’s plan of killing URL bar in Chrome. Well, as a loyal Chrome browser user, @Tech18 team felt it as a best feature which can provide more space for what is expected out of browser.

But, Google has other plans! Google has quietly abandoned the idea of hiding the location bar to gain more pixel space for web content. Well removing this feature was just adding 2-3 lines of code, but Google said they have cancelled “Compact Navigation” flag and they aren’t going to include this as Chrome’s core feature.

Google discontinued this feature by removing following code in Chromium 94162 build.

While Google disabled the hidden switch to enable compact navigation as well, the code of the feature itself remains in Chrome. The only way for users to access this feature would be a developer version or nightly build of the browser that was published prior to July 26.

In a discussion thread comment, Google said,

Compact Nav prototype was meant to be a way for [Google] to try out a new form factor rather than be a permanent redesign. We don’t think that this is the optimal direction to take Chrome’s UI, so the experiment has ended and we’re removing the prototype.

When we  had shared this update during the month of May, many of our readers liked it and even we agreed with them as it was something really different from prior releases. This feature was not required in PC – version of Chrome browser as we have larger screens. For tablets, yes it is useful!

Google aggressively ends the prototype and made it clear in their comment. No URL bar appeared to be a clear trend toward latest feature as even Mozilla followed up with a similar add-on for Firefox.

It’s all over now. Get back to older and lengthy location bar. Like it or not, Google has removed it as of now. Maybe they’ll think about it in later stage if required.

Innovation, Intelligence and Implementation are best three which suits Google on whichever product you consider. As a company, Google never did partiality to any of its product, they treated every product equally and they never backed while given strong competition to their rivals.

Here comes one more awesome and innovative idea by Google Chrome team which can raise the boiling point of Browser war above their rivals!

Few months back Google opened a webstore for Chrome web –apps which made users to access their favourite sites within few clicks. Many of them replaced native Windows or Mac applications. For example, you can consider Tweetdeck and Angry Birds game.

But these web apps are completely disconnected or require the use of complicated APIs in order to make use of a third-party service, e.g., posting a comment to Twitter from your custom publishing domain. What if we could give sites the ability to leverage these services without any knowledge of the chosen service, except that it provides some set of predefined functionality?

To fix this problem, Google brought in Android application architecture in place and thought of consuming few of the components. If you are an Android application developer you would have already known about a component which connects two applications in Android, if not they you can have a read below

Android OS has a component called Intents which is used to connect two applications without having in-depth knowledge on how other application has been coded. Intents is a facility for late run-time binding between components in the same or different applications.

In the Intents system, the client application requests a generic action, e.g. share, and specifies the data to pass to the selected service application. The user is given a list of applications which are registered so that they can handle the requested intent. The user-selected application is created in a new context and the data is passed sent from the client, the format of which is predefined for each specific intent type.

Well that shows clear picture how your Camera application on Android linked to Gallery. Isn’t it? When you take the same example for Chrome app, new photo hosting site could easily integrate editing functionality from something like Aviary or Picnik, without either of those services needing to implement a special API unique to that photo hosting site.

Yes, there are lots happening inside Google ecosystem and here is how they express their views,

We are hard at work designing an analogous system for the web: Web Intents. This web platform API will provide the same benefits of Android Intents, but better suited for web applications. When designing the system, we have first and foremost been interested in creating a simple, easy-to-use API. With Web Intents, you will be able to connect your web app to a service with as little as two lines of code! Chrome will perform the heavy lifting for you.

As with Android, Web Intents documents an initial set of intent actions (edit, view, share, etc.) that likely cover the majority of use cases on the web today; however, as the web grows and sites provide more functionality, new intent actions will be added by services that document these intents, some more popular than others. To foster development and use of intents, we plan to create a site to browse existing intents and add new intents.

That’s impressive! Isn’t it?

But here comes one more shocker for all of you. James Hawkins, Software Engineer at Google said,

Mozilla is also actively exploring this problem space. In fact we’re working closely with Mozilla engineers to unify our two proposals into one simple, useful API. Visit the examples page to try out the feature in any current browser. To explore using the API in your site, check out out the JavaScript shim, which provides an implementation of the API for browsers that have not implemented this feature. We are rapidly prototyping this feature, so check back soon for an announcement when Web Intents is available behind a flag in Chrome.

As Google said during I/O 2011, they are working towards unified ecosystem where each product works together which increases the ease of use!

WordPress, the ultimate blogging platform which has turned many bloggers ( both part-time and full-time) enhance their blogging skills and hence earning $$ to quit their daily job.

Before blog was used as only personal dairy and hence was limited to access to only those persons who wants to share their personal information, but things have changed now, now bloggers blog to earn money  through various channels like Google Adsense, Affiliate Marketing and more services and hence improvise their writing skills.

As a webpage designer and web application developer each and every one of us will have one question in mind for sure. Will my webpage work fine with the future releases of the browser? Or do I’ve to redesign it? Isn’t it?

To solve these problems, Chrome started with different channel called Chromium which provides a facility to download the latest build of the product. After Chrome, even Apple’s Safari, Internet Explorer and Firefox started releasing the lot many betas, aurora, platform preview etc. These releases surely help the developer to test their webpage for future releases.

Now! Where’s Opera? It is nowhere in the frame right? This is because till now Opera was stuck to release only beta, RC’s and final version. But now even they joined their rival browsers with the new release cycle.

What is Opera Next?

Opera Next is a stand-alone installation of the Opera desktop browser intended for testing the development of new features, technologies, and improvements.

Opera Next automatically updates when new versions become available without affecting your everyday browsing. This means whenever the new version is available Opera Next will let you update your Opera Next installation.

One good thing about Opera Next is, just similar to Chrome and IE, Opera Next will never affect the Opera installation, so you’re safe to play around with alphas, betas and even snapshots! User can run Opera and Opera Next simultaneously.

You can also distinguish between Opera and Opera next by the difference the logo. Opera Next comes with the white colour logo.

Opera and Opera Next’s Release Cycle

Well this time around, Opera has got a fresh and best release cycle to stay in browser war. The standard development release cycle for Opera Next includes builds of: snapshots, alpha, beta, beta2, release candidate (RC), RC2, and final.

But user can also configure this release cycle. opera:config allows users to disables automatic updates of snapshots for Opera Next.

In comparison to Opera Next, the Opera browser product is designed for day-to-day use and is only released for beta, release candidate (RC), and final versions. While these releases are identical to beta, RC, and final versions of Opera Next, the installations still remain separate, as described above. Auto-update only applies to final releases of the Opera browser (if this is enabled) as shown in the diagram below.

Key Notes:

• The diagram above depicts release cycles for Opera Next with default settings and Opera with auto-update enabled.
• O = optional manual download. If you download a beta build, any beta2 is automatically updated, followed by the final. For manual download of RC, only final builds are automatically updated.

What is new in Opera Next?

Extensions were introduced in Opera 11. Now with Opera 11.50 we take them to the next level! Developers can add new functionality to your Speed Dial. A click of your mouse opens a new tab that could show live news feeds, display the weather, present email notifications or much more.

We hope the new release cycle will work out really well Opera team by getting some more users. Opera 11 couldn’t get expected market share but the overall market share of Opera has got a little jump as Firefox and Internet Explorer lost some.

Finally a much awaited gadgets release date is out. Just a week before Apple took a step ahead by releasing iPad 2 in Indian Market. Now get ready to experience the next versions of Galaxy Tabs.

Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 8.9 inches tablets had a release date in mid April before Apple’s iPad 2. But due to some unknown issues it got delayed by Korean Manufacturers.

Both the versions of next generation Galaxy tablets are set to hit Indian market in next month for Rs. 35,000 and Rs. 28,000 respectively.

In a recent interview for the daily newspaper Business Standard, Samsung Mobile India Head, Ranjit Yadav said,

“We will launch the 10-inch tablet PC at around Rs 35,000 and the 8-inch device will be priced around Rs 28,000. While the tablet PC market today stands at around 25,000 units a quarter, we expect it to grow exponentially here on.”

The pricing seems to be pretty decent, but it is still unclear that this pricing is for 3G version or WiFi only versions. I think, it is for the WiFi only versions, as the 3G version of original Galaxy Tab was priced at INR 38,000 at the time of launch last year.

During the development phase of Firefox 4, Mozilla labs started new channel for experiments which they named as Mozilla Prospector.

Prospector is a series of experiments from Mozilla Labs focused on analyzing, experimenting and prototyping improvements on how you search and discover content with Firefox. We’re focusing on three main areas: websites you have visited, tabs you are currently viewing, and pages you haven’t visited yet.

As Mozilla says, Prospector mainly focuses on address bar which actually does the above mention areas. And now, here come a question! Is Mozilla actually planning for something like OmniBox in Google Chrome?

For those who don’t like to use their mouse for clicking on the options always, Mozilla has also got some useful keyboard shortcuts as well.

• Ctrl-L focuses the location bar with the URL selected — ready to copy, edit or replace
• Ctrl-K pre-fills with “search: ” so you can search the web just like from the search bar
• Ctrl-T + tab opens a new tab and activates search (as if you tabbed to the search bar)
• Easy to search like “boo: book name” is enough to search for books. No need to type full work “book:” or “picture:” for any search.

Notice that “boo:” is good enough to activate the books category (it turned green), so if you wanted, you could just type “b:” to get books as well.

What Awesomeness Is Still Missing?

• One related side effect of defaulting to opening new tabs is that replacing pinned app tabs is a bit more difficult. You actually can’t change the URL of an app tab with AwesomeBar HD installed because the URL will open up in a new tab. So for now, you’ll have to remove the app tab or create a new one.
• Instant search will be more useful if we stop thinking about server hit every time.

Android App Store Will Take Over Apple’s iStore Soon!

The success of these Tablet OS’s and Tablet manufactures is directly depending on how many applications are getting developed and how many of them are used!

Almost all the Tablet OS developer and few Tablet Manufacturers are having their own app store for gadgets they are developing. If we name some,

Distimo a publication company in US mainly covers the all the latest happening around these app stores. Distimo’s recent publication cleared said Google’s Android Market will top the app market by throwing Apple App Stores aside in terms of number of applications.

Here are the 4 major finding about app market,

• The Google Android Market eclipsed the Apple App Store for iPhone in terms of free applications and now has 134,342 free applications, while the Apple App Store iPhone has 121,845 free applications.
• If all application stores maintain their current growth pace, approximately five months from now Google Android Market will be the largest store in terms of number of applications followed by the Apple App Store for iPhone and iPad, Windows Phone 7 Marketplace, BlackBerry App World and Nokia Ovi Store. The Windows Phone 7 Marketplace will also be larger than the Nokia Ovi Store and BlackBerry App World prior to the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace being available for even a full year.
• One year after launching the iPad, Apple will be confronted with its first serious competition as both BlackBerry and Google enter the emerging tablet market. Apple has already seized momentum and grown the App Store for iPad in the first year to 75,755 applications developed by 21,975 publishers. Daily downloads in the Top 100 Overall paid and free applications for iPad combined exceed 500,000, while the daily revenue in the Top 100 paid is approximately $400,000 excluding in-app purchases.
• Many of the top publishers on the iPad already publish cross-platform. Fifty-eight percent of the 50 most popular publishers have already developed applications for non-Apple platforms.

These top four finding by Distimo publishers clearly shows how application market is going to change in next few months.

Google’s Android never lost its momentum and kept its graph growing steadily. Battle is on and it’s actually a wake-up call for Apple, BlackBerry and Windows teams to start getting as many good apps as possible.

Here comes an yet another new version of Google Chrome. Google today updated chrome to version 10 with some great features and improvements.

Three weeks back only Google had updated its beta version to Chrome 10 and as said before, Google has stuck to its base rule of release new copy of Google Chrome once in every six weeks!

Here are the speedier, simpler and safer Chrome 10 features,

#1. New version of V8

With today’s stable release, even your most complex web apps will run more quickly and responsively in the browser. For the curious, this boost corresponds to a 66% improvement in JavaScript performance on the V8 benchmark suite.

#2. In-tab Settings Page

Google Chrome 11 gets an in-tab settings page by default. Rather than opening settings in dialog box Chrome now opens it in tab.

Google also added a search box that shows you the settings you’re looking for, as you type.

#3. Separate Direct Link for Each Setting

You can goto settings page by typing chrome://settings/ on omnibox. It does not end here. Now user can jump directly to Basic setting page through chrome://settings/browser, personal stuff through chrome://settings/personal and under the hood through chrome://settings/advanced URL.

#4. Improved security

Google has made some security updates by adding malware reporting and disabling outdated plugins by default.

#5. Sandboxed Adobe Flash

Finally, you will be even safer as you speed around the web. Google extended Chrome’s sandboxing technology to the integrated Flash Player in Chrome. So if you are using Windows Vista or newer versions, you will benefit from the additional layer of protection against malicious webpages.

#6. Chrome Sync now enabled by default

After Firefox, Chrome gets an sync feature enabled by default. For those of you who save your passwords in the browser, you can now quickly log on to the websites you frequent even when you switch computers, by simply synchronizing those passwords across your computers.

You can also encrypt those passwords with your own secret passphrasefor extra security. To enable sync on each of your computers, visit the “Personal Stuff” section in Chrome’s settings (or just type “sync” in the settings search box).

User can also choose to sync bookmarks, extensions, preferences, themes and more!!

#7. GPU Accelerated Video

This release also includes a preliminary implementation of GPU-accelerated video. Users with capable graphics hardware should see a significant decrease in CPU usage. In full screen mode, CPU usage may decrease by as much as 80%!

This means better battery life so you can keep going!

As you all know Google never stops adding new features to its browser Google Chrome. All these features made Google to enter the browsers war and became strong contender in very short span of time!

Hope you all checked out the latest browsers stats from Net Applications and StatCounter which clearly showed how Google Chrome conquered world in two years. Google Chrome stats is now inching towards Firefox.

Chrome 10 will be released in few days and has got some very good features in it. The current build of Chrome 11 showed two more additions under About:flags page.

FPS Counter

Well FPS stands for “Frames per Second“. As you can see in the image, it described as

Shows a page’s actual frame rate, in frames per second, when hardware acceleration is active.

As per our knowledge this feature is an addon for upcoming 3D rendering features for Chrome. But still not yet clear with it!

Focus Existing Tab on Open

Title says it all. Focus existing tab on open is described as,

Typing a URL of an existing tab into the omnibox results in refocusing the tab instead of loading in the current tab.

If you the list of features in Firefox 4, Mozilla strongly highlights on this features. This feature is very simple but it has advantage as well as disadvantage!

Advantage is, if a user has opened more tabs and does not remember which all tabs he/she has opened. In this condition, user can just type a URL and Chrome takes you to already opened tab.

Disadvantage is, user cannot open same URL twice! But Firefox 4 will allow to do so!

Well these are couple of additions in list of Chrome features. But it is still under flags and may take sometime to go live
