When Microsoft released the consumer preview version of Windows 8, right after that Mozilla had confirmed the Metro version of Firefox Browser. Recently leaked document shows how exactly the Metro UI of Firefox looks like.

Getting back to the Windows 8 basics, there are 3 types of applications:

1. Classic Desktop Applications
2. Metro Applications
3. Metro style enabled Desktop Browsers

Mozilla is looking forward to building the Metro styled enabled Desktop Browsers, which will be built using Gecko and will be integrated with the Metro environment. Unlike all the other apps, even Firefox will support full screen resolution and touch based interactions, connected with the metro environment.

But unfortunately, a browser can run in Metro mode only if it’s the default browser. So if Firefox is not our default browser, then we won’t able to enjoy the Metro version of it.

Earlier in the day, we got a big shocker from AOL. AOL has acquired Huffington Post and continued to expand. And then sources said, TechCrunch will be renamed to HuffingtonCrunch. What is happening?

And here we get yet another shocker for you guys. Well this time it is from Mozilla.

There were days where browser developers used to take years to develop and release new version. All this got changed when Google said “Use a brand new Chrome for every 6 weeks from now!”

Google has kept its promise and releasing new version of Chrome browser once in every 6 weeks. Recently Google released Chrome 9 with some great features.

Firefox 4, 5, 6 & 7 by end of 2011!

Lets get back to actual post. Mozilla has now joined Google and planning to release Firefox 4, 5, 6 and 7 by the end of 2011. As far as compared to Firefox 4 development, Mozilla is planning to boost up their development cycle and going to accelerate from now.

Recent discussion about Mozilla’s plan for 2011 noted following point,

1. Ship Firefox 4, 5, 6 and 7 in the 2011 calendar year
2. Always respond to a user action within 50 ms
3. Never lose user data or state
4. Build Web Apps, Identity and Social into the Open Web Platform
5. Support new operating systems and hardware
6. Polish the user experience for common interaction tasks
7. Plan and architect for a future of a common platform on which the desktop and mobile products will be built and run Web Apps

Product Priorities for 2011

Mozilla has not only set priorities for Firefox browser but also has plans for something more. Mozilla wants to have a web platform with Identity, Social and Apps!

Well the product priorities for 2011 goes like this,

1. Ship our new technology to users in smaller bundles, more frequently
   1. Four technology shipment vehicles in 2011, including Firefox 4
   2. Achieve a regular cadence for shipping
2. Develop a product that is responsive from “click to render”
   1. No more than 50ms delay between user action and application reaction
   2. Provide optimizations to hide network latency
   3. Obtain metrics from users in addition to our test infrastructure
3. Expand the Open Web Platform to include Apps, Social and Identity
   1. Design and implement open systems for Identity and social interactions
   2. Design and implement Web Application Framework
   3. Implement missing pieces of CSS/HTML required for compelling Web Applications
4. Never lose the user’s data or state
   1. Continue to improve stability
   2. Mitigate the cost of application failure
   3. Interact with cloud-based storage to allow users to “take it with them”
5. Shine the primary UI until it gleams
   1. Determine and optimize top 5-10 user interaction flows (ie: search for restaurant)
   2. Improve tools for customization/restoration of old functionality so we can remove it from primary UI
   3. Improve user interface polish so that Firefox feels modern, graceful and elegant
6. Support modern operating systems and platforms
   1. Windows 64-bit
   2. OSX 10.7
   3. Android 3.0
   4. ARM CPUs
7. Plan for a future where Desktop, Mobile and Web Apps run on a common platform
   1. Need to design and architect towards this eventual outcome
   2. Implementation of this is not a priority

Huh! Mozilla has gone a great makeover to come up with this new plans.

Firefox 5 to get Account Manager, Simple Sharing UI, UI Animation, support to 64Bit Windows. Firefox 6.0 will deliver JavaScript optimizations, Web Applications and FasterCache. And Firefox 7.0 is yet to take form, but undoubtedly the project is still contouring.

Well Mozilla is going to push hard towards its plans. If it going to working like Firefox development in 2010, Mozilla will surely hit again and will loose more users to its competitors Chrome, IE and Opera!

Just few days before while tweeting on Twitter we were shocked to see few updates about costs of domains like Twitter, Facebook and many other big guns. They are up to millions of dollars!

Well we all think a lot before we start naming our domain to match our profile well. If you remember a story behind Facebook, it had two predecessor Facemash and thefacebook. There are many stories behind other companies as well.

Today we are going to tell you guys about How the name ROCKMELT came.

What is and Why Rockmelt?

RockMelt is fast, secure, and stable because it’s built on Chromium, the open source project behind Google’s Chrome browser. It’s your browser – re-imagined and built for how you use the Web.

The Name Rockmelt!

Many of you might be thinking the name Rockmelt somewhere related to volcanoes and lava, likewise Firefox highlights fox, Google Chrome‘s Chromium(a metal) project.

RockMelt was the result of a three-week long brainstorming where they came up with names been liked and tried to buy the domain then. But they couldn’t afford the astronomically high price quote and then had to start all over again to find a new name.

Some of the names which were generated by the Rockmelt team  included Fringe, Groove, Take3, Frowser, Blarge, BamBam, Kodiak, Acunda, Avogadro, Wamp, and Yoke. These names are very famous for all computer geeks and as the domains would cost more.

Rockmelt team added “As ridiculous as some of these may sound, it was nothing compared to the cost of the domain names – some were as high as $500,000!”.

Rockmelt team extended explaining more about the name in their blog,

We wanted a name that was memorable, something that was easy to say and easy to spell. We started throwing words we liked up on the whiteboard.  There were a lot of different words but we liked “Melt.”  Since “Melt” is a soft word, it needed a strong or hard complement.

We thought about Diamond, Shark, Mountain, Steel and a host of others but the simplicity of “Rock” stood out.  RockMelt.com was unregistered so we jumped on it – for $12, a far cry from the $500,000.

Well now the name Rockmelt is ready and they stated thinking about the logo and creating the right look and feel. Here they got a help from good folks at DesignMap in San Francisco to develop the visual identity. One fine day a designer at DesignMap did a sketch in his notebook of the Earth. And they finalized the logo.

Well this is story behind the new kid in browser world and Rockmelt team added “Now, a year and a half later, we remain in with love the name – it’s the best $12 we’ve ever spent.”

The time has arrived for next beauty to play around on web. Confused? Don’t be. We are speaking about the most happening news, HTML5. As we all know HTML5 is latest version of HTML and has got some new features in it.

Well one side HTML5 is attracting web developers and website owners. Other side browsers are updating themselves for HTML5 support. All recent browser releases like Internet Explorer 9 beta, Chrome 7 build, Firefox 4 beta’s, Opera 10.7 beta are running high on HTML5 features.

Recently we saw Chrome 7 topped the HTML5 test and other side Opera is updating JavaScript. Well the browser war is on and fight is going to be tremendous. Fight has become still more stronger by the entry of IE9 with some amazing feature.

Oh! Lets get back to our topic. Before that let me ask a question. Got a website that works best in a standards compliant browser? Means it works well in latest browser and for older browsers you have to code more? We do agree with Internet Explorer’s never ending problem.

Now Google has come for your rescue. Yes! Again Google is back with one more feature. Google Chrome Frame is a latest tool by Google which render your page using Google Chrome rather than Internet Explorer.

How to use?

Before answering this question we want you to go and grab Chrome Frame. Done downloading?

Google Chrome works easily by just adding following meta tag in your page header as shown below,

<meta http-equiv=”X-UA-Compatible” content=”ie=edge,chrome=1″>

by adding this simple meta tag Google Chrome Frame will render the page using Google Chrome rather than Internet Explorer. This gives users the appearance of using IE, but the speed and standards compliance, and security of Chrome.

Isn’t that Cool?

Well the only problem is installing the Chrome Frame doesn’t automatically make your Internet Explorer use Chrome to render webpages. It still requires updates from both user end as well as developers end. As a user they should install Chrome Frame and as a developer they need to include meta tag in their pages.

But as all our existing website upgrading towards HTML5 features and in future upcoming sites coming live with HTML5 features like video, audio and canvas tags, its time for something more. IE9 is still having some bug in it and scoring less, staying on bottom in HTML5 test is going to hurt developers for sure.

And not to forget, currently IE9 is not supportable for Windows XP which is a big blow for developers and XP users. Adding Chrome Frame will surely help developers and users for some fun with HTML5 features
