iOS4 vs Android1 10 Awesome Android Features that iOS 4 and iPhone 4 Lack

We all are very busy in getting to know how iPhone 4 is ruling the smart phone market now. Even we were busy in noting down all cool new features of iPhone 4 or iOS 4 comes with in its new release. But mean time after the release of iPhone 4, many bloggers wrote about its problems.

Today we are going to share few awesome features of Android that iPhone 4 and iOS 4 lacks. icon smile 10 Awesome Android Features that iOS 4 and iPhone 4 Lack

Tech tip: Android is Google’s operating system for mobile devices. iOS is Apple Inc’s operating system for mobile devices.

There are many new smart phones in line to beat iPhone 4 when compared to the features of iPhone. As we all know, Android is one of the biggest competitor for iOS. Following are the features where Android gained advantage over iOS 4 and iPhone 4.

Apple Flash1 10 Awesome Android Features that iOS 4 and iPhone 4 Lack< credit >

Many rivals of iPhone 4 took advantage over it by running flash contents. As we all know iPhone doesn’t support Flash contents due to many reasons. May be Steve Jobs is totally relaying on the HTML5 to compete with iPhone rivals.

But as of now the main feature iPhone lacks is Flash player, where as Android based phones support flash contents and are quite well in displaying it:).

Apple wants to keep things clean and clear, so they placed only one big button on the phone. The primary function of this button was navigating the users to the home screen, now the same button is being used to switch between the applications.

When we compared iPhone with Android based phones, Android has few more physical buttons like dedicated back button and menu keys which makes it more user friendly and provides quicker navigation. It’s easy to hit a dedicated button than searching for the place in screen to hit!

browsers1 10 Awesome Android Features that iOS 4 and iPhone 4 Lack

Currently when we were looking at our list of missing features in iPhone 4, we got to know one more big fight between Apple’s iOS 4 and Google’s Android is the browser available by default.

Tech Tip: iPhone 4 uses its safari browser and Android uses Android 2.2 Froyo browser.
Ars SunSpider and V8 benchmarks showed the Nexus One blowing iPhone 4 out of the water with almost double the JavaScript performance.

However,  iPhone 4 has a slight lead when Flash was enabled on the Nexus One, and slightly behind when Flash was disabled.

Have a look at  the below video where the iPhone 4 browser  is compared with Android’s browser without flash plugin. [Video by Engadget ]

Apple itunes1 10 Awesome Android Features that iOS 4 and iPhone 4 Lack

As we all know the only way for you to transfer your media files into Apple devices is through iTunes. Let me ask you a question,  Do you how much time iTunes will take to add files and sync it?

Whereas in case of Android, they can be easily used as USB devices for faster transfer of files and folders.

Notifications1 10 Awesome Android Features that iOS 4 and iPhone 4 Lack

This is one of the big not-to-like feature in iOS 4 and Android has one of the best modes of notifications one could ever want.

In Android, All notifications (like a new SMS, reply to a chat conversation, new e-mail, alerts etc.) are neatly organized in an expandable menu. So, whenever any of these notifications appear, they are quickly displayed for some time in a small strip that always stays at the top of the screen.

Consider that you’re chatting with a friend on Gtalk, while surfing the web. Whenever the person replies, you will see it in that small strip, without it disrupting whatever activity you are doing. To respond back, you will need to just swipe that strip down to open the proper notifications menu.

While the iOS 4 still follows the old method of pop-up notifications that will keep interrupting you. So, every reply to your chat conversation or a new SMS will make the iPhone bring a pop-up menu in focus, requiring you to take an action before you can get back to what you were doing. This is not good, especially now that they have got multi-tasking working, they could have done better with handling notifications. Not to mention the fact that the pop-up reveals content right in your face, for any prying eye to easily get a glimpse of.

iphone camera1 10 Awesome Android Features that iOS 4 and iPhone 4 Lack

Megapixels in smart phones seem to be increasingly competing with digital cameras. Apple is still not ready going for more pixel camera in their iPhone’s. As we noticed iPhone 4 has 5MPcamera while Android based phones having 8MP camera in it. This makes Android based phones more demanding in the smart phone market.

This point shows, still iPhone 4 is not a complete mobile a normal user should go for it!

Tech tip: Android has dual flash for its camera icon smile 10 Awesome Android Features that iOS 4 and iPhone 4 Lack

Widgets1 10 Awesome Android Features that iOS 4 and iPhone 4 Lack

Apple has solved the problem of application icon clutter by introducing folders. May be a really good move! But if you’re going to arrange applications  in folders, then consider that one more click before you can see what you want, instead of having it placed directly on the home-screen.

Android makes good use of Widgets. With multiple home-screens, we can arrange an assortment of Widgets that we can be swiped across swiftly.

Isn’t it an advantage? You can place your favorite applications in home screen and just a click is enough to access it rather than going inside the folder every time and search for the applications and then access it!

The small LED notification light is a boon when you leave your phone on a desk for a long time. The iPhone screen will shut down after momentarily displaying a new notification. You wouldn’t know any new activity without turning it on to check manually. But the LED light on Android phones keep blinking, letting you know something new has occurred for you to see.

May be this is just a simple point, but it works a lot for busy people!

voice command1 10 Awesome Android Features that iOS 4 and iPhone 4 Lack

Voice commands may seem basic. However, not for iPhone users, who still can’t use default voice commands to make calls or bring up a contact info.

We can’t expect Google Voice application on iPhone 4, as Apple is not ready to collaborate with Google. But our strong feeling is Google voice could have enhanced iPhone’s functionality, offering users the ability to make calls while saving their precious time.

The percentages of users who go for smart phone are the one who surf the Internet to the core. You can ask a question here, if they want to access web they can go for some normal phone which supports web, why smart phones?

But here the point is, smart phones will be having bigger screen and users won’t struggle to scroll down for every 10 lines. If you compare iPhone 4 screen with Android’s, Android’s will win the race. iPhone 4 comes with screen size of 3.5 inches as it is 4.3 inches in Android based phones. This obviously makes the difference in its resolutions as well.

=====================================================

We feel these are the areas which iPhone or iOS is still lacking and Android’s are making a big impact. Still there are few disadvantages in iPhone. If we mention about battery once again like all previous generation iPhones, iPhone 4 too does not have a battery that user can replace.

Hope we have noted few important points which Apple should look into before they release next phone icon smile 10 Awesome Android Features that iOS 4 and iPhone 4 Lack Please let us know if you any more points to add here. • You are right buddy :)
Even I am waiting for that day when people will switch from iPhone's to android based phones :)
      Thanks for commenting :)

  1. Brilliant work Buddy.. I am really in love with the Android OS , from the day I have had my hands on the Samsung Galaxy S.. Its just awesome..

    • Thats cool buddy :) Can you share the best features you liked in Samsung Galaxy S.?

  2. It's nice that you phrased it as "features Android has" rather than better features.

Some items on your list aren't universal to Android but specific to some android-based models. Android isn't a monolith but a somewhat fragmented hardware/carrier specific partnership

Some might be considered bugs rather than features – Flash, More Buttons, etc.

And, you forgot one biggy, preinstalled apps (crapware) that can't be removed.

    • If I am not wrong I think we can't remove the pre-installed apps from any phone. Please let me if I am wrong Buddy :)

      • Not talking about the useful apps that either Apple or Google install like mail but the crapware that the carriers are installing. The kind you found on Dells all the time. Apps that Google/Android nor the manufacturer has any say over. Buddy

      • 1) Flash sucks. Every popular use of flash for games/web whatever, can be replaced by apps and the ongoing replacement of HTML5, CSS and JavaScript. All of which are more open, designed for touch, more reliable and secure, and drain less battery(on the iphone specifically).

        2) Do not give android credit for any hardware specs. Android is the OS. Features like 8 MP vs. 5 MP are limited by a number of other things including shutter speed, etc. The only true comparison is the photos compared next to each other.

        3) The browsing experience on the iPhone is much more similar to that of a pc web browser. It is also more simple, glossy, and has a clearer interface. You cannot compare the speed of the browser to simply one device. It is the hardware that is making the difference, not the OS entirely.

        4) The syncing process with itunes takes minimal excess time in comparison. The process of not only syncing media, but contacts, mail, calender, photos, etc, is extremely simple and more then affective.

        5) Widgets on a smart phone are completely unnecessary to the large majority of its users. Your argument that switching between home screens is simpler then clicking a folder? I'm not sure I can see the logic in that. The time it takes to simply click a folder…

        6) Apple is not too stubborn to work with Google, and vice-versa. They are company's that are trying to help the consumers, and will give us the best products possible. The Google voice app is in fact now available. So be careful what you predict.

        7) The iphone is made by a company that designs the hardware and the software. This allows for the device to be consistent in it's platform, which is especially useful to app producers. The hardware android is on varies from phone to phone and is limited by the pre-installed software and capabilities of the device it's on.

        8) Try not to deceive so many users and curious consumers about smart phones in such a bias way. Making a list like you have above, is only useful if you tell the FULL truth. My comment here is strongly bias towards the iphone simply because readers need to see at the very least, a few counter points. There are certainly features the iphone OS is lacking that android is not. But that goes both ways. Be more educated please, buddy.

        • I am not using iPhone, rather, I am an iPad user. In reply to your point 4, The thing that irks me most was you need "iTunes" for everything you do! It does not take too long? It is not long if you consider only the time taken for the syncing process.

It is especially frustrating when I want to copy files from friends' computer or another computer to my iPad. The current process is such:

Copy the files from friend's PC to USB. Next, connect the USB drive to my PC with iTunes installed, copy the files over. Depending on type of applications and document, now, I have to sync between my iTunes and the iPad or using the application's special sync instructions.

If the file is not too big, email it to me, open the mail within iPad, open the file attached with the correct application, and save it with the application.

For Symbian and Android users, their lives are a lot easier. Connect the devises to the PC and just drag those files over. Or copy all documents to SD card, and plug it to the device.

A point to add on the original poster's on why I think Android is better:

I could.not.even send a photo taken on my Nokia phone over to my iPad via Bluetooth! At first I thought it was some kind of glitch with my phone as the model is well known for bugs. Later did I find out that many other phone users have the same problem trying to bluetooth a photo to another friend's iPhone.

My process? Bluetooth the photo to my PC, copy the photo to the correct synch folder, fire up iTunes to transfer over to iPad. Great job I say!

        • With all due respect.. some, if not most, of your "clarifications" are subjective and not based on technical facts.

          1) HTML5 + CSS + Javascript is far from being a replacement for the FULL capability of Flash. I would agree this capabilities are not that useful for a smartphone. Still you're wrong.

          2) True that

          3) This is subjective (not the hw part of course)

          4) Subjective, personally prefer external-storage-like sync. besides, Android has the google account sync for contacts, calendar

          5) Most subjective, I love widgets, iOS ui seems kinda' dull

iOS is awesome, still Android is far better for me, I'm a developer, I can develop and deploy an app in no time. I have to make a living, in my country (Uruguay) I can't choose to develop -only- for the Apple platform, without that, it's very, very hard to develop and to go through the validation process in order to make a buck out of your app

          • By flash replacement I tried to infer that to be in context. Meaning websites used for and targeting mobile devices. I apologize for the way I said that and the misunderstanding.

Apples syncing process does indeed lack several features that would be extremely helpful. Perhaps that's why their going to announce an entirely cloud based syncing feature for iOS 5.

Apples entire marketing strategy and company philosophy does not depend on the "technical facts". If that's what was important to the majority of users then Apple would not be successful. I'm sure as a developer you understand that. Android fanboy sites that focus entirely on tech specs need some subjective argument when debating the "better" product.

Lastly, do you ever find yourself running into problems developing on the android platform with diversified hardware? Many developers don't but I know some that run into that problem all the time.

  3. Excellent article. Am planning to buy an Android based phone. Can u suggest me one within reasonable budget?

    • We are glad that you liked the features buddy :) Let me know your budget for smartphone. We will let you know the best smartphone in that range :) Thanks for the comment :)

  4. Android is an amazing alternative to the iphone. I like a lot this comparisons charts. Good!

    • You said the right thing here Pablo :) Android is all set to take on iPhone's now :) Thanks for the comment buddy :)

  5. Nice roundup of the differences. I think that I am pretty much set on Android as my next phone (currently using a Blackberry).

I just don't see Apple staying competitive in this market for some reason.

    I suppose time will tell.

    Have a great day!

    • I strongly agree to your point "don’t see Apple staying competitive in this market for some reason". Thanks for the sharing your view here Mark :)

      Have a great day :)

  6. Hey there Sunil,

I am a big fan of Android and it is good to know that Android seems to have a good amount of advantageous features over the iPhone. I think someday Android is going to win over the iPhone.

    Regards,
    Shiva

    • Any particular feature you liked in Android buddy??

      Thanks for the comment :)

  7. I have also have not like iPhone ever. Now I am using Android on my HTC HD2

  8. Display??? The Display on the iPhone 4 blows every android device out of the water I have a Nexus One (which has an AMOLED screen which is beautiful) but as soon as I have my girlfriends iPhone 4 next to it the N1 screen looks very dated compared to Apples, also iPhone 4 wins in touch screen accuracy, typing on an iPhone 4 is a dream, on my N1 I just use the talk button (which is a feature I love) I the Android OS is in my opinion better than the iOS4, but the iPhone 4 (hardware), blows every android device away, just the building quality alone is superb, I am not even going to start on battery life (I know I can replace my battery, but who wants to carry charged batteries around all the time?). My girlfriend dropped her iPhone with out any cover from about 3 feet onto concrete and there was not a single scratch (I still think she was lucky).
Overall it totally depends on what you want and what you use it for, I can't say which product (hardware and software together) is better. The iPhone is more a fashion device, where the Android is more a geek device. They both have their strengths and weaknesses and at the end of the day they are both great.

  9. Yeah.. My iPhone 4 doesn't come with the flash player and I can't play flash files. That's too bad. Anyway I still love my iPhone 4. :D

  10. Yo. The browser in the Android may be better than Safari, but that doesn't mean you can't download a new one to your phone.

At least, that's what I do. Try out surfing the web on your iPhone with Opera Mini. Now that's an experience! :)

  11. It is almost too scary to just buy a smartphone nowadays because the technology for them are ever changing. Now I am a fan of the Android phone–wonderful features and extremely versatile. I truly think that the Android will be the new phone sensation. There are only so many iPhone updates–the ideas will soon become too repetitive. They will have to think about something else to do with it.

  12. Now apple is Ahead!

    For Physical Keys:

Apple shows the Single button can do lots of work!

    Notification:

Apple has Push notifications for each n every app. And Now iOS 5 have notification center too.

    Display size:

Steve already told.. Phone should be fit inside the pocket. if it the screen is more than 4 or 5″ We all used to call as TAB.

    Flash:

Steve is always correct. Flash is not permanent one. Now Adobe told no more flash for upcoming generations. !

    Voice Command:

Apple have good Voice Command compared to others. 40% of siri work will done by the iphone 4 voice command app.

n siri is on the Way bro.

    Camera Pixels:

Why Apple comes with Low amount of Mega pixels camera.?

Apple gives low pixels i accept. but cant your compare the quality which
is taken in 8MP cam of android? Apple gives quality not depend on MP.

    Widgets:

Customization makes the Phone laggs. Apple knows that.. So they limited
it. If you need Customization. go for Android :) Hang a bells on your
    phone.. merry xmas

    Transfer media:

Why apple needs itunes to sync.?

    Its mainly for Security purposes.

You cant load the content which is not supported by iphone. important one. Virus cant go into it :P

    LED Notification Light:

Its a good feature for android. Dont worry Apple wont Copy this from u guys :P
